Alberto Busettini and Andrew Appel perform works for two harpsichords (a clangorous and silvery sound) framed by preludes for violin, cello, and continuo with Olivier Brault and Loretta O'Sullivan. <image:title>About - The Four Nations logo</image:title>
<image:caption>Cross the Pont des Arts, the walking bridge from Le Louvre to the left bank, and you will approach the embracing arms of the only Italianate palace of Paris. Today this unique building serves as The French Academy, but in 17th century it was known as the College of Four Nations and it was Mazarin’s legacy to Louis XIV and France. The minister and friend left a fund to build an institution to house his library and celebrate the far-reaching cultural power of his adopted country. In the ensuing centuries, its gold and black dome welcomed great minds that defined cultural values and kept French art and thought central to the world. It positioned genius of all disciplines in a large context. The Four Nations Ensemble, moved and fascinated by the context of the music they perform and love, is named in honor of the college, the image of Mazarin’s dome depicted in their logo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In all of Four Nations’ programs and with decades in arts education, our goal has been to allow music to work as a catalyst for creative thinking, for nourishment through listening. The musicians cherish this music and our aim is to share the wealth of experience we have enjoyed with young people from every corner of our country, from New York, New York, to Amarillo, Texas, to Crested Butte, Colorado.</image:caption>

<image:title>Andrew Appel - Andrew Appel, harpsichord & fortepiano</image:title>
<image:caption>Andrew Appel, Artistic Director of the Four Nations Ensemble, performs throughout Europe and the United States as soloist in many festivals including Italy's Spoleto Festival, New York's Mostly Mozart Festival, and the Redwoods Festival. As recitalist, Mr. Appel has performed at Carnegie and Avery Fisher Halls in New York, as well as halls from the Music Academy of the West to the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Besides his work with The Four Nations Ensemble, he has been a guest of Chatham Baroque, the Smithsonian Players, and Orpheus. He serves as harpsichordist for Opera Lafayette and has toured with several European chamber orchestras. He has enjoyed critical acclaim for his solo recording of Bach works with Bridge Records as well as his fortepiano performances of Haydn for ASV. He presently records for ASV and Smithsonian recordings. As an educator, Appel has been called upon to create significant programs in arts education for elementary school students and professional development for teachers. Appel created a program linking the Amarillo Symphony to the public schools in that city, “Music makes the Difference.” In Chatham, New York, Appel organized festivals of culture and history for third through sixth graders while instituting “salon discussions” between the teachers of Chatham and art curators, dance historians, musicologists, and arts journalists. Both programs have made significant additions to the lives of participating school communities. With Four Nations and funding from Chamber Music America, Appel has designed and run residencies in communities around the country with kindergarten through college students, most recently in St. Cloud, MN. As a writer, Mr. Appel has written program notes and articles for presenters around the country including Lincoln Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and National Public Radio. Mr. Appel has participated in discussions on education and chamber music programming at conferences of Chamber Music America, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, and the New York State Council on the Arts. He currently serves as President of the Board of Trustees of Chamber Music America. He has been regularly praised for pre-concert talks that contextualize the music and open areas of discovery for the audience. A native of New York City, Appel discovered the harpsichord at 14 and began lessons with Tim Read and Igor Kipnis. First-prize winner of the Erwin Bodkey Competition in Boston, he holds an international soloist degree from the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp where he worked with Kenneth Gilbert and a Doctorate from the Juilliard School under Albert Fuller. There he has taught harpsichord and music history. Appel has also taught harpsichord, chamber music, music history and humanities courses at Moravian College, Princeton University, and New York Polytech, now a division of NYU.</image:caption>

<image:title>Krista Bennion Feeney - Krista Feeney, violin</image:title>
<image:caption>Krista Bennion Feeney has enjoyed an unusually varied career much in demand as a soloist, chamber musician, music director, and concertmaster. Krista has been a member of the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble (serving for eight years as director of chamber music) and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s since 1983, where she performs frequently in the roles of concertmaster and violin soloist. She is currently involved in rediscovering and reviving a musical sound world from the past as the founding first violinist of the Serenade Orchestra and Quartet, playing music of the late-18th and early-19th centuries on historic instruments with original instrumental configurations. From 1999-2006, she was the music director of the unconducted New Century Chamber Orchestra based in San Francisco. She has made several solo appearances with the San Francisco Symphony (making her debut in Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in e minor at age 15), with the St. Louis Symphony, the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra in the world premiere of SolTierraLuna (a concerto written for her by Terry Riley), the Mostly Mozart Festival, and the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and at the Kennedy Center, in addition to several historic instrument ensembles. She is the founding first violinist of the DNA Quintet, Loma Mar Quartet, and Ridge String Quartet (1979-1991), which, along with pianist Rudolf Firkusny, won the Diapason d’Or and a Grammy Award nomination in 1992 for its RCA recording of Dvorak’s Piano Quintets. The DNA Quintet, comprised of the Loma Mar Quartet with the addition of bassist John Feeney, has released world-premiere recordings of string quartets and quintets of Domenico Dragonetti on historic instruments to critical and popular acclaim, bringing this uniquely beautiful music to light after being hidden for more than 165 years in the British Library. The Loma Mar Quartet has also recorded original works written for the ensemble by Paul McCartney for EMI, and its members were recently featured as soloists in Arnold Schoenberg’s Concerto for Quartet and Orchestra with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, and with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s for Paul Taylor’s American Modern Dance performances. Krista studied violin with Anthony Doheny, then Isadore Tinkleman and Stuart Canin at the San Francisco Conservatory, working later at the Curtis Institute with Jaime Laredo, Felix Galimer and Mischa Schneider. In May 2014, The Times praised Krista’s playing of a violin sonata by Jean-Marie Leclair saying: “Her deep notes were rich and melancholy … there was a tender exuberance in both tumbles of notes and sustained phrases … a dramatic interplay of ferocity and light slyness.”</image:caption>
